Narasi.net – Russian anti-virus company Kaspersky Lab was blacklisted by the United States (US) on Friday (25/3). Kaspersky was added to the list by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) because it was considered a threat to US national security.
The FCC lists Kaspersky with China Telecom (Americas) Corp (0728.HK) and China Mobile International USA (0941.HK). The list contains providers of communications equipment and services deemed to be a threat to national security.
Last year, five Chinese companies entered the list first, including Huawei Technologies Co (HWT.UL) and ZTE Corp (000063.SZ). For information, Kasperksy is the first Russian company to enter the list.
“[Updating the list] will help secure our network from threats posed by Chinese and Russian state-backed entities seeking to engage in espionage and otherwise harm American interests,” said FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr.
In fact, the US government has long said the use of Kaspersky could make America’s internet network vulnerable to Russian attacks.
That’s why the US blocked Kaspersky antivirus products from federal networks in 2017. However, Kaspersky has repeatedly denied the company’s ties to the Russian government.
Furthermore, the FCC does not link Russia’s invasion of Ukraine with Kaspersky’s blacklisting or President Joe Biden’s call about a possible Russian cyberattack.
In response to this, Kaspersky regretted the steps taken by the FCC and called it ‘based on ego politics’.
“[The move] is baseless and is a response to the geopolitical climate rather than a comprehensive evaluation of the integrity of Kaspersky’s products and services,” the company said in a statement.
