Ukrainian pride: Usyk successfully defends heavyweight belt over Joshua

narasi.net – Oleksandr Usyk kissed the blue-and-yellow banner of Ukraine and shifted focus over to the Saudi Arabian sky as he waited to discover if he had regarded his conflict torn country by holding his reality heavyweight titles.

When he heard the triumphant words “yet,” a close to home Usyk raised his left arm and pulled the banner over his face.

Six months ago, he was watching the streets of Kyiv with a programmed rifle and defending Ukraine from the attacking Russians.

Here, inside the ring at King Abdullah Sport City field, the still-undefeated Usyk had satisfied his charging as the sporting pride of Ukraine by beating Anthony Joshua in a closely battled rematch on Saturday to keep his WBA, WBO and IBF belts.

“I dedicate this triumph to my country, to my family, to my group, to all the military defending this country,” the 35-year-old Usyk said through a translator. “Much thanks to you incredibly, much.”

Following a tiring five-month instructional course, Usyk entered the field in a blue-and-yellow top conveying the words “Colors of Freedom” and supported by words of consolation from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his daily video address to the country.

“We stick together,” the president said. “We help one another. We restore what was destroyed. We battle for every one of our kin. Also, we cheer for those who represent Ukraine, today — definitely for Usyk, our person!”

Also, Usyk started as the favorite in the wake of outclassing Joshua in the first battle in London in September last year.

However, the British challenger, a previous double cross hero, came into the rematch with another strategy from his new mentor Robert Garcia: Attack Usyk’s body and keep the pressure on.

Furthermore, it almost worked, with Usyk taken to the limit in the 10th round as he was chased around the ring by Joshua, who landed combinations and designated Usyk’s ribs.

Usyk took a full breath at the ringer, then came out hard in the tenth round, harming Joshua with an early right snare and driving him onto the ropes without precedent for the battle.

The battering of Joshua was sustained in the eleventh while the twelfth was evenly battled, the battle ending with the two fighters — obviously exhausted — falling to their knees before one another on the canvas.

Then, in an exclamation loaded speech inside the ring in the wake of snatching the receiver, Joshua — who moments prior was seen getting two of Usyk’s belts and tossing them to the canvas — hit back at his critics prior to praising Usyk for battling so well in the circumstances.

“I was studying Ukraine and every one of the champions from your astounding country,” Joshua said. “I’ve won’t ever be there. What’s going on there, I don’t have the foggiest idea but it’s not good. For Usyk to be champion, under those circumstances, please raise your hands.”

Usyk was free about Joshua, as well

“This is now history,” he said. “Numerous generations will watch this battle, especially the round when someone attempted to beat me hard. But I stood ready and turned it another way.”

Usyk also asserted the Ring Magazine belt with the success. There’s just a single heavyweight title that Usyk doesn’t possess — the WBC one that is going to be cleared by Tyson Fury, who says he is resigned.

When asked about Fury, Usyk said: “I’m sure Tyson Fury is not resigned at this point. I’m sure Tyson Fury wants to battle me. If I’m not battling Tyson Fury, I’m not battling by any stretch of the imagination.”

Two judges gave it to Usyk, one 115-113 and the other 116-112. The other gave the battle to Joshua, 115-113.

Joshua, a double cross heavyweight champion, tumbled to his third loss in 27 fights and his profession is at a crossroads.

Where Usyk goes from now appears to depend on Fury.

Saudi state television published photographs showing Crown Prince Mohammed canister Salman attending the battle. The 36-year-old son of King Salman, the crown sovereign has pushed for sporting events to come to the realm even as U.S. knowledge agencies accept he requested the beheading and dismemberment of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.
